All You Need To Know: A Beginners' Guide

At Titirangi School we practice an open door policy and believe in parents' participation.

SCHOOL MOTTO
The school motto ‘Kia Kotahi’ means ‘Be As One’.

ABSENCE FROM SCHOOL
When a child is absent from school please call or email the office at: sandieo@titirangi.school.nz..

In the case of absence for other reasons, e.g. holidays during term time, please discuss with the class teacher and Principal.

Children are not permitted to leave the school grounds without permission. Parents or relatives wishing to take children out of school must advise the class teacher and fill in the register in the school office.

Children must use the main entrances when entering and leaving the school. Children are not to use bush tracks to obtain access to the school grounds.

CLOTHING
All clothing worn to school should be clearly named. This includes footwear, swimming togs, towels and clothing for Physical Education lessons or sport. Children must wear a wide brimmed hat in the Terms 1 and 4. We also ask that students wear clothing that covers their shoulders as a protection against the sun and do not wear singlet-style tops.

COMMUNICATION WITH PARENTS
Newsletters: these are issued on a fornightly basis by email only to keep parents informed of school events. Paper copies are available on request.

Syndicate Newsletter are published once per term teachers.

CONCERNS, COMPLAINTS AND COMPLIMENTS
We are on the ‘same side’ … we are all wanting the best for the children. By working positively together, this can be achieved. You are encouraged to discuss concerns with us (firstly with the staff member directly involved), formal complaints should be submitted in writing to the Principal or Chairperson of the Board, and of course, do tell us about the things you like and appreciate – we may be able to do more of these.

LIBRARY
Children are encouraged to borrow books from our excellent school library. At the end of each term a check is made of all books borrowed. If books cannot be retrieved, parents may be expected to recompense the school. All students are expected to have a library bag. These can be purchased from the school office.

PARKING
Parents are requested to refrain from parking in the school grounds or driveway. It would be appreciated if parents arranged to deliver and pick up children using Atkinson, Kohu or Titirangi Roads. Please do not park in the designated drop off zone at our school entrance.

REPORTING AND INTERVIEWS
Parents will be informed of their child's progress and development in a number of ways. These include written reports, interviews and open days. It is also important for parents to give teachers information that will help the school provide for the children's education.

Other than on these set occasions, should parents wish to discuss matters of concern relating to their child, please contact the school and make an appointment to see the child's teacher or a member of the school management team.

SCHOOL FEES / DONATIONS
A voluntary school fee is requested each year to be paid as a bulk amount or per term. This donation is used to supplement Ministry of Education funding and enables our school to provide extra programmes, support and resources. Without this support from parents many of our programmes could not take place.

SCHOOL HOURS
  8.50am      School commences
10.30 am   Morning interval
10.50 am   Morning school resumes
12.30 pm   Lunch time
  1.25 pm   Afternoon school commences

SICK BAY
If children become ill while at school, they will be cared for in the sick bay. If it is considered desirable that a child be taken home, then parents will be contacted. In extreme cases where parents cannot be contacted and when expert medical opinion is considered necessary, then it will be sought.

Sometimes children need to have medicines at school for such things as asthma and bee stings, or require antibiotics during school time. The medicines should be clearly labeled with the child's name, type of medicine and dosage. A ‘Request to Administer Medication’ form must also be completed. Please see the office staff. We have a safety cabinet for the storage of such medicines.

SUNSENSE
Children are required to wear a wide brimmed hat during terms 1 and 4. These can be purchased from the school office. Sunblock should also be applied when involved in outdoor activities.

TEXT BOOKS AND RESOURCES
All textbooks and resource materials which children will require for normal school work will be provided. There are, however, occasions when children's own resources are helpful in topics being studied, and children are encouraged to bring these to school.
