Year 5 and 6 Waterwise Sailing at French Bay

EOTC or Education Outside of the Classroom is an important part of the school programme. The purpose of EOTC is to provide students with access to hands-on experiences that are not available inside the classroom. It allows students opportunities to develop strong relationships with their peers and teachers and to move outside their comfort zone.

One of the EOTC experiences that we provide is the Waterwise sailing programme for the Year 5/6 students. Waterwise is a water safety programme that uses yachting to assist students become more confident & competent in the water.

We are lucky to have Rooms 18, 19 and 21 attend Waterwise at French Bay in the last week. The weather has been perfect for learning to sail.

A huge thank you to Mr Alan Gordon for running our schools programme and to the supportive parent helpers that we need to be able to run these class trips.

"I love capsizing the boat, especially on a hot day because you get totally wet and it cools you down. But it was really hard to get back in the boat!" - Leo "I loved catching the big gushes of wind and going really fast, that was heaps of fun. Capsizing was fun too, but one time my rudder fell off and I had to quickly swim to grab it before it sank." - Patrick

"When the sail moves right about you, it makes you move faster and faster and that part was fun. You need to have one hand on the tiller and one hand on the rope. I had fun chilling in the boat by myself" - Atisha

"Waterwise is challenging because you have to turn the boat in the waves and change sides to duck from the boom." - Dakota

"It was kind of stressful, but in a fun stressy way! It was fun steering the boat even though it was a bit tricky." - Rose
