We held a successful hui on Monday 22nd March. Victoria Stevenson presented the school-wide expectations of the delivery of te reo Māori and the resources available to teachers. These include:
Te Reo is seen and heard around our school every day.
Tikanga is followed at school.
Our values of Ako Tahi, Manaakitanga and Whanaungatanga are understood and expressed by all.
Staff use daily class routines to build knowledge of tikanga Maori e.g, start and finish the day with a karakia, or sing a waiata each morning, and/or say a karakia mō te kai before eating.
Our school pepeha is displayed in class and shared with children.
The whakatauki for each term is displayed and shared.
Staff will use and teach te reo Maori each week via resources such as Ngā kupu o te wiki, He Reo Tupu, He Reo Ora and Te Reo Tuatahi.
We also shared the curriculum overview for this year, and the connections we are making to Te Ao Māori. It was great to receive feedback on some of the concepts we have planned for the year. Also, some of the initiatives that are underway e.g. the whole school learning the Haka Pōwhiri.
We also started planning for Matariki celebrations (9th July - Matariki dawn ceremony) and the significance of this being a time of bringing people together, rekindling relationships and reflection, looking forwards to new goals and vision.
